Avanos is a Turkish coffee cup set inspired by the distinctive landscape of Cappadocia and the sculptural formations of its fairy chimneys. The project explores how the geographical character of the region can be translated into an everyday object through form, proportion and function rather than direct representation.
I approached the cup as a relationship between form, use and storage. Instead of adding a conventional handle as a separate element, I integrated the grip into the main body of the cup. This creates a continuous silhouette while providing a functional point of interaction and reducing the space required when multiple cups are stored together.
The saucer was designed as an active part of the system rather than simply a surface beneath the cup. Different openings allow the cup to be positioned in alternative orientations, establishing a physical relationship between the two pieces and extending the formal language into the way the set is placed and used.
Through the integrated handle, the relationship between cup and saucer, and its sculptural proportions, Avanos translates the formal characteristics of Cappadocia into a functional porcelain object. The project brings the memory of a specific landscape into the familiar ritual of Turkish coffee, connecting place, object and everyday use.
